Uche Sparks Straightforward Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This occasion offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
