Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
