British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
